Steven L. Suib was born in western New York state where he obtained a B. S. degree in chemistry and geology at the State University College of New York at Fredonia. His graduate work was done at the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana with Galen D. Stucky. His postdoctoral work was done at Illinois with Larry R. Faulkner. He joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Connecticut in 1980 where he is currently Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor.

In a career spanning three decades, Wachs has earned international renown for research into heterogeneous catalysis. His research focuses on the catalysis science of mixed metal oxides (supported metal oxides , bulk metal oxides, polyoxometalates, zeolites and molecular sieves) for numerous catalytic applications (selective oxidation for manufacture of value-added chemicals, environmental catalysis (selective catalytic reduction of NOx and SOx), hydrocarbon conversion by solid acid catalysts for increased fuel energy content, olefin metathesis for on demand production of scarce propylene, olefin polymerization, conversion of methane to liquid aromatic fuels, biomass pyrolysis, water-gas shift for production of clean hydrogen and photocatalytic splitting of water to clean hydrogen. The research aims to identify the catalytic active sites present on the heterogeneous catalyst surface to allow establishment of fundamental structure-activity/selectivity relationships that will guide the rational design of advanced catalysts. The research approach taken by the Wachs group is to simultaneously monitor the surface of the catalyst with spectroscopy under reaction conditions and online analysis of reactant conversion and product selectivity with online GC/mass spectrometer analysis. This new methodology has been termed operando spectroscopy and is allowing for the unprecedented development of molecular level structure-activity/selectivity relationships for catalysts. The spectroscopic techniques employed by the Wachs group for determination of the catalytic active sites and surface reaction intermediates are Raman, infrared (IR), ultra violet- visible (UV-vis), X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XANES/EXAFS), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and Temperature Programmed Surface Reaction (TPSR). Isotopic labeling of Deuterium, Oxygen-18 and Carbon-13 is also used to track reaction pathways, determine rate-determining-steps and distinguish between spectator species and actual surface reaction intermediates. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has honored Wachs with a Clean Air Excellence award for a catalytic process he invented that converts paper-mill pollutants into formaldehyde. The American Chemical Society (ACS) has given Wachs the George A. Olah Award for achievements in hydrocarbon and petroleum chemistry and the American Institute of Chemical Engineering (AIChE) has honored Wachs with the Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Division Practice Award . He is the recipient of multiple awards from local catalysis societies (Michigan, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia). In 2011, he was named a Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the highest honor bestowed by the society. In 2012, he was recognized by the German Alexander von Humbolt Foundation with a Humboldt Research Award and the International Vanadium Chemistry Organization with its Vanadis award. Wachs has published more than 300 highly cited technical articles (H index of 110) and holds more than three dozen patents. Dr. Stanislaus S. Wong is Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at SUNY Stony Brook, and an Executive Editor for ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University. He and his group are fundamentally interested in synthesizing novel classes of nanomaterials, possessing unique chemical composition and morphology, for diverse applications including primarily energy.

Dr. Chuan-Jian Zhong, Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science at State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton, USA, was a Max-Planck-Society postdoctoral scientist at Fritz-Haber Institute, postdoctoral fellow at University of Minnesota, and associate scientist at Iowa State University and Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory, received National Science Foundation Career Award, SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, 3M Faculty Research Award, and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Invitation Fellowship, authored/co-authored about 645 papers and about 15 US patents, and was selected by Shanghai-Elsevier Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2016 as one of the Most Cited Researchers.

Guangwen Zhou

Guangwen Zhou teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in materials science, thermodynamics, X-ray diffraction and crystallography, and transmission electron microscopy. His research focuses on atomistic mechanisms of surface and interface phenomena; materials stability in harsh environments including oxidation and corrosion; materials synthesis and processing under nonequilibrium conditions; materials for energy storage/conversion, heterogeneous catalysis and electronic devices; and materials characterization using dynamic in situ electron and scanning probe microscopy, diffraction, and spectroscopy. Professor Zhou has published over 150 journal papers, including Nature Materials, Nature Communications, PNAS and Physical Review Letters. Professor Zhou is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award (2011) and the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities (2016). Professor Zhou received PhD from the University of Pittsburgh (2003), MS from Beijing University of Technology and BS from Xiangtan University, China. He held research positions at Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Pittsburgh prior to joining SUNY Binghamton faculty in 2007.

Charles Sykes is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Tufts University. Charles got his B.S. and M.S. from Oxford University before moving to Cambridge University for a Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Richard Lambert. He then relocated to the U.S. to start postdoctoral fellowships with Professor Paul Weiss at Penn State and Professor Mike Fiddy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Research in the Sykes Group at Tufts University is aimed at understanding a range of technologically important systems from molecular rotors to chiral surfaces. Sykes was named a 2008 Beckman Young Investigator, a Cottrell Scholar of Research Corporation, an IUPAC Young Observer and is the recipient of a 2009 NSF CAREER Award.

Eric Altman is Professor of Chemical Engineering at Yale University. He received a B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University in 1983, and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1988. From 1990-1993 he was with the Chemistry Division of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). At NRL, he focused on scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies of fullerenes and their interactions with metal surfaces. Since joining Yale in 1994 his work has been directed towards using STM to directly observe the mechanisms and kinetics of elementary reaction steps on surfaces. Current research topics include fundamentals of transition metal oxide catalyst surfaces, chemical imaging of surfaces, ferroelectric surfaces and interfaces, and the initial stages of oxide epitaxy on semiconductors.

Title: Improving the Efficiency of X-ray Driven Chemical Reactions with Nanomaterials

Professor Ting Guo's research group at UC Davis focuses on studying the mechanisms and control of energy exchanges between nanomaterials and between nanomaterials and their environment. The forms of energy include chemical energy, visible photon energy, and especially X-ray photon energy. Nanomaterials can be uniquely used to harvest these forms of energy and redirect them to facilitate chemical reactions, including catalytic reactions and radical reactions in aqueous solution, and to cause changes such as electric field and temperature. Most of these energy redirection and control processes can be made to occur with nanometer precision. Currently we are investigating catalysis involving carbon dioxide using very small nickel and platinum nanoparticles with and without substrates, ultrafast processes in nanomaterials, and particularly enhanced X-ray radiation absorption, energy deposition, and chemical manipulation using architectures of atomic, molecular and nanoscale species. Studying these three interconnected areas enables us to achieve a more complete understanding and nonlinear growth of knowledge within each subject.

Dr. Zhipeng Wu received his Ph. D. degree in chemical technology from Tianjin University in 2019 under co-supervisions of Prof. Chuan-Jian Zhong and Prof. Lichang Wang. He visited Prof. Chuan-Jian Zhong’s group as a visiting scholar at State University of New York at Binghamton from 2016 to 2018. He is currently a visiting post-doctoral scholar in Prof. Xiong Wen (David) Lou’s group in the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His research interests focus on experimental and computational studies of functional nanomaterials for applications in fuel cells and water electrolyzers.
