Dr. Puri received her Ph.D. degree in chemistry from the Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, INDIA, studying the chemical synthesis of modified phospholipids and the possible use of their liposomes in drug delivery. Currently, she holds the Research Biologist position at the CCR RNA Biology laboratory, NCI-Frederick, NIH. Her research revolves around several themes including (a) Lipid-based nanoparticles for targeted delivery of cancer therapeutics including RNAi Therapeutics, (b) Stimuli-sensitive nanomedicine for on-demand site-specific delivery of anti-cancer drugs and siRNAs to improve cancer therapies, (c) Development of nano-scale diagnostic tools for detection of pathogens and cancer biomarkers, and (d) Cell Biology of Viral Entry, and mechanisms of opportunistic infections in AIDS and related diseases.

Stephan T. Stern

Title: Understanding The Complexities of Nanomedicine Pharmacokinetic, Bioequivalence and Lot Drug Release Testing

Dr. Stern is Laboratory Co-Director, Director of Research and Development and Head of the Pharmacology and Toxicology Section of the Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory. In this role, Dr. Stern leads new research initiatives and oversees application to the NCL assay cascade program. Dr. Stern is also involved in the design and implementation of pharmacology and toxicology studies used to characterize nanoparticle disposition and assess nanoparticle biocompatibility, as well as NCL drug formulation efforts. Data generated from these studies support formulation optimization and translation, including IND regulatory filings. Additional responsibilities include representation of NCL at local and national nanotechnology meetings, and the education of study personnel regarding nanoparticle safety issues.
Prior to joining the NCL, Dr. Stern was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill in the Division of Drug Delivery and Disposition, and Curriculum in Toxicology. In this position, his research focused on examining the role of intestinal metabolism in modulating the gastrointestinal toxicity of chemotherapeutic agents. His areas of expertise include biochemical toxicology of the liver and kidney, analytical methodology and drug metabolism/pharmacokinetics. He received his B.S. degree in biochemistry from the University of Rochester and his Ph.D. in toxicology from the University of Connecticut at Storrs. Dr. Stern is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology.

Bruce A. Shapiro

Dr. Shapiro received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Maryland in 1978, with undergraduate work in mathematics and physics. During his association with the NIH, Dr. Shapiro has done extensive work in image processing, nucleic acid structure prediction and analysis, and computational and experimental nanobiology, leading to several novel algorithms, computer systems, experimental techniques, and discoveries in RNA biology. His latest interests include RNA nanobiology, understanding the relationships between RNA structure and function, and the use of parallel high-performance computer architectures to solve problems related to RNA computational and experimental biology and molecular modeling.

Dr. Bogusław Buszewski graduated at the Faculty of Mathematics-Physics-Chemistry of the MariaCurie SklodowskaUniversity in Lublin (Poland). In 1986 he has received his PhD degree at the Faculty of Chemical Technology, Slovak TechnicalUniversity in Bratislava (Czechoslovakia). In 1992 he achieved the Doctor of Sciences (habilitation) degree. In 1994 he has received a professor position at the NicolausCopernicus University in Toruń and in 1999 received the title of professor of chemistry (full professor). From 1994 he started organizing his research group at the Faculty of Chemistry, Nicolaus CopernicusUniversity in Toruń and became the Head of the Department of Environmental Chemistry & Ecoanalytics, then transformed into the Chair of Environmental Chemistry & Bioanalytics. Until now he takes over this function. From 2010 he is also the head of the Education & Research Center in Separation Sciences & Bioanalytics = BioSep at the Nicolaus Copernicus University, Toruń (Poland). He has been Humboldt Fellow at Tübingen University (Germany) and a visiting professor at several universities in the USA, Japan, China, India, Australia, Russia, UK, Brazil, South Africa, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, the Netherlands, Canada, Taiwan and other European countries. He is a member of the editorial boards of 26 national and international journals and has authored or co-authored 18 books, numerous patents (most of them has been already implemented), lectures and more than 600 scientific papers (h=52). He is one of the most citied chemist in Poland (over 13 500 citations). Prof. B. Buszewski was a supervisor of 45 PhD thesis, and a mentor of 23 DrSc applications. Prof. Buszewski is the president of the Central European Group for Separation Sciences (CEGSS) and the chairman of the Committee of Analytical Chemistry of Polish Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the Division of Environmental Chemistry of the European Association of Chemistry (EuChemS). He was the president of Polish Chemical Society, the president of the Societas Humboldtiana Polonorum and the European Society of Separation Sciences. In 2007 he was awarded by the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) of prestige award Master (Mistrz) and in 2009 he has received the Polish Prime Minister award. He also received the National Award of the Ministry of Science & High Education in 2013 and 2020. He was awarded by numerous national and international organizations (including multi Doctor Honoris Causa of 6 universities). He was decorated of the Gold Cross of Merit (2002) and Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2015) by President of Poland. He is a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Central Commission for Degrees and Titles, and vice-chairman of the Council of Scientific Excellence. Main scientific interests: analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, separation sciences, chromatography and related techniques (LC, GC, CZE, SFC, MS, adsorption, sample preparation, miniaturization), spectrometry, bioanalytics, metabolomics, nanotechnology, environmental chemistry, modeling and chemometrics.

Quentin Pankhurst is Director of the Davy-Faraday Research Laboratory and Wolfson Professor of Natural Philosophy – a post once held by Lord Ernest Rutherford – at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, in London. He runs research programmes in bio- and nanomagnetism aimed at making practical advances in the use of magnetic nanoparticles in healthcare. These include medical imaging devices, targeted regenerative medicine, molecular imaging microscopy for living cells, and the development of multifunctional nanoparticles for therapy and diagnostics. He is a founder and CTO of Endomagnetics Ltd, a spin-out company which is currently running clinical trials of the SentiMag™, an intra-operative device for breast cancer surgery.

Dr. Peixuan Guo received his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Genetics with training in biophysics from the University of Minnesota in 1987. He was a postdoc at NIH before joining Purdue University as an assistant professor in 1990, tenured in 1993, full Professor in 1997, and was honored as a Purdue Faculty Scholar in 1998. He founded two Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs and established a NIH Nanomedicine Development Center at Purdue. He was recruited to University of Cincinnati as the Dane & Mary Louise Miller Endowed Chair of Biomedical Engineering in 2007, and was Director of the NIH Nanomedicine Development Center relocated from Purdue to University of Cincinnati. He moved to University of Kentucky as William Farish Endowed Chair in Nanobiotechnology in 2012, and was the UK Director of Nanobiotechnology Center.
In Jan 2016, he joined The Ohio State University College of Pharmacyas the first Sylvan G. Frank Endowed Chair in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery Systems. He was recruited in collaboration with Ohio State’s Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute (DHLRI) and will hold a joint appointment in the College of Medicine’s Department of Physiology & Cell Biology. He is also currently the Director of NCI Cancer Nanotechnology Platform Partnership Program in RNA Nanotechnology for Cancer Therapy, and the Director of Center for RNA Nanobiotechnology and Nanomedicine.

Presently, Dr. Kaushik, as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry, is exploring advanced electrochemical sensing systems and nanomedicine for personalized health wellness at the Department of Natural Sciences of Division of Sciences, Art, & Mathematics at Florida Polytechnic University. He is the recipient of various reputed awards for his service in the area of nano-biotechnology for health care. His excellent research credentials reflect by his four edited books, 100 international research peer-reviewed publications, and three patents in the area of nanomedicine and smart biosensors for personalized health care. In the course of his research, Dr. Kaushik has been engaged in the design and development of various electro-active nanostructures for electrochemical biosensor and nano-medicine for health care. His research interests include nano-bio-technology, analytical systems, design and develop nanostructures, nano-carries for drug delivery, nano-therapeutics for CNS diseases, on-demand site-specific release of therapeutic agents, exploring personalized nano-medicines, biosensors, point-of-care sensing devices, and related areas of health care monitoring.

Devika Chithrani

Title: Gold Nanoparticle Mediated Radiation Response Among Key Cell Components of The Tumor Microenvironment for The Advancement of Cancer Nanotechnology

Dr. Devika Chithrani is an assistant professor in the Department of Physics at Ryerson University, Canada. She obtained her BSc from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka where she was awarded the faculty gold medal and gold medal for physics. Further pursuing her higher education in Canada, she received her MSc and PhD degrees from University of Toronto where she was supported by the prestigious NSERC, OGS, and OGGST fellowships. Dr. Chithrani completed her PhD research work at National Research Council, Canada and was granted an NSERC fellowship to continue her postdoctoral research in the field of nanobiotechnology. Dr. Chithrani has become a respected member of the science community as her scientific papers have received thousands of citations in a few years. To extend her work into the use of nanotechnology for cancer research, she joined the Princess Margaret Hospital in 2007. Dr.Chithrani’s extensive research has been both published and featured (on the cover) of the Journal of Radiation Research in 2010. She is currently directing the Nanoscience and Technology Development Laboratory at Ryerson University. Her research program is skillfully designed to improve the understanding of the bio-nano interface. Better knowledge of the nano-bio interface would lead to better tools for diagnostic imaging and therapy. As a positive step forward in this direction, gold nanoparticles are being used as a model platform for understanding how size, shape, and surface properties of nanoparticles (NPs) affect their intracellular fate. These fundamental studies will facilitate building of better NP-based platforms for improved results in the future cancer care of patients. Dr. Chithrani has earned a strong international reputation for her innovative research through her many review articles, book chapters, and invited presentations. She is editorial boards of many nanotechnology based journals.

Lucia Baldino graduated in Chemical Engineering, summa cum laude, in 2011, at the University of Salerno, Italy, discussing a thesis on the “Production of polymeric membranes by supercritical phase separation for active packaging applications”. Then, she gained the Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering, in 2015, at the same University, with a thesis on “Green processes based on SC-CO2: application to materials of biomedical interest”, obtaining an outstanding judgment. Starting from 2015, she is a research fellow at the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Salerno, Italy. In 2018, she got the Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale (ASN) to become Associate Professor (SSD ING-IND/25).

Gil Gonçalves

Title: Carbon Nanocapsules Toolkit for Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy

Gil Gonçalves graduated in 2003 in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and obtained a Master degree in Materials Science (EMMS, Joint European Master's Programme) in 2008. In 2012 he received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Aveiro with a thesis dedicated to nanocomposite materials for biomedical application. After obtaining a Marie Curie research fellowship in 2016, he started working at the Institute of Material Science of Barcelona-High Council of Spanish Research (ICMAB-CSIC) on the development of ultra-sensitive nanotherapeutic anticancer agents for neutron capture therapy. He was a short-term visitor on various occasions at the Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Energy (LENA, University of Pavia) and Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Trieste. Currently, he is working at Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation (TEMA, University of Aveiro) as a researcher on the development of new graphene-based nanocomposite materials with application on many different fields: Graphene-based porous structures for heterogeneous catalysis (Catalysis) and water purification (Environment), three-dimensional graphene scaffolds for biomedical applications (Biomaterials), nanostructured graphene substrates for selective biomolecules detection (Sensors) and carbon-based nanoplatforms for diagnosis and therapy of cancer (Therapeutic agent). He has (co-)authored numerous scientific papers (h-index 23 and >2400 citations (Scopus)) and communications in national and international conferences and he is a regular reviewer for high impact scientific journals in the field of multifunctional carbon nanomaterials. He is a member of the editorial board of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) in the field of Chemical Physics.

Helena Iuele

Helena Iuele is a post-doctoral fellow at the Nanotechnology Institute of Cnr (IT) within the ERC project INTERCELLMED. Her research is focused on the synthesis of optical sensors for the pH, O2 and K+ mapping in 3D in vitro tumor models. Previously, she was a post-doctoral fellow at Universidad Nacional de Colombia (CO) where she prepared new fullerene derivatives for applications in solar cells. In 2019, she completed her Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Waikato (NZ) where she monitored environmentally and ecotoxicologically carcinogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals. In 2015, she became a material specialist at IMaST Scarl (IT) and patented sensors for monitoring glucose, lactic acid, and nicotine.

Sérgio R.S. Veloso has his BSc degree in Biochemistry from the University of Minho (2017), and MSc degree in Biophysics and Bionanosystems (2019) from the same institution. He was granted a FCT PhD fellowship, and is PhD candidate in Physics by the PhD programme MAP-fis. His research is focused in soft matter materials for theranostic applications and drug delivery, besides colloidal science, mainly in liposomes, plasmonic and magnetic nanoparticles. Currently, his research has generated 9 international peer reviewed articles and/or conference proceedings ISI/Scopus, 1 book chapter, and at least 10 conference presentations. Ilaria Ottonelli

Ilaria Ottonelli graduated in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. During her thesis at Ulm University, Germany, she gained experience with animal models and learned how to manipulate animal tissues for imaging purposes. She graduated in 2018 with top honors and entered the Ph.D. Program of Clinical and Experimental Medicine in 2019. As a Ph.D. student, Ilaria Ottonelli’s research is centered on the optimization of polymeric nanoparticles loaded with different therapeutic molecules, focusing on retinal delivery, blood-brain barrier targeting, neurodegenerative diseases, and trafficking of nanoparticles via tunneling nanotubes, thanks to several collaborations with other laboratories in Europe.
